The Department of Physico-chemical Research & Archaeometry is responsible for the application of the Natural Sciences to the study of archaeological and cultural heritage materials, the investigation of ancient technologies and materials, the authentication and provenance studies, the publication of analytical results and the issuance of permits for physicochemical analysis.
In addition, the Department promotes archaeometric research and interdisciplinarity in the study of cultural heritage and supports conservation work through chemical analysis and related methodologies. It maintains an archive of analytical data, establishes collaborations with analytical laboratories and research institutions in Greece and abroad, participates in European research programs, and engages in educational activities and outreach initiatives (including the organization of conferences, workshops, seminars, and Open Labs) dedicated to the application of the Natural Sciences in archaeology.
