IFIGENEIA Project

On April 3–4, 2025, the Kick-Off Meeting of the research program IFIGENEIA Project took place at the Central Library of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), with the participation of public and private institutions from Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Bosnia.

The aim of the project is the construction of a Linear Accelerator for the production of a wide range of radioisotopes, with applications in medicine, cancer therapy, industry, and Cultural Heritage, establishing centers of excellence in the Balkans.

From the cultural heritage sector, the Department of Conservation, Chemical - Physical analysis and Archaeometry of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is participating in the project. The department will contribute through analyses of archaeological samples in collaboration with the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, aiming to optimize “open beam” techniques.

The staff of the AMTh involved in the project includes Dr. Anastasia Gadolou, Archaeologist – General Director, Dr. Christos Katsifas, Chemist – Head of Department and Ioannis Nazlis, Chemist (MSc)

Scientific coordinator of the project is Professor Dimos Sampsonidis (Department of Physics, AUTh).
