The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Friends of AMTh Association, continues this year the much-loved series of scholarly lectures: “Wednesdays at the Museum – Archaeological Lectures”
This Wednesday, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Association of Friends welcome Dr. Georgia Pliakou, Head of the Department of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and Museums of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thesprotia, for a lecture titled:
“Gitana: Old and New Archaeological Data on the Political Center of the Thesprotians”.
In the northwestern corner of Thesprotia, on the banks of the Kalamas River and a short distance from the Ionian coast, the city of Gitana was founded shortly after the mid-4th century BC. In addition to its public buildings, such as the prytaneion and the theater, epigraphic evidence and significant archaeological finds confirm that the city served as the political center of the Thesprotians.
Thanks to many years of work on the enhancement of residential remains and the restoration of the theater, carried out through co-funded programs, Gitana now constitutes a well-organized archaeological site.
