The exhibition "The Europe of Greece. Colonies and coins from the Alpha Bank Collection" was organised in cooperation with Alpha Bank, for the Greek Presidency of the European Union during the second half of 2014. Alpha Bank funded the exhibition and lent coins from its collection.
Focussing on coins, their circulation and use on European soil, along with other artefacts, the phenomenon of Greek colonisation is presented, an especially significant historical event for European culture in general. 182 objects in total were displayed in a specially designed hall, with an interactive multimedia application about coins, developed by the Institute of Technology and Research.
The exhibition was enriched by ancient artefacts by other institutions, the National Archaeological Museum, the 3rd E.P.C.A., the 7th E.P.C.A. (Museum of Ancient Olympia), the 10th E.P.C.A. (Museum of Delphi), the 11th E.P.C.A. (Museum of Eretria), the 12th E.P.C.A. (Museum of Ioannina), the Numismatic Museum, the private collections of Alpha Bank and D. Mantzounis, the Museu Nacional d'Arqueologia de Catalunya, the Museu Nacional d'Arqueologia de Catalunya-Empúries, the Parco Archeologico di Naxos Lungomare Schisò, the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Basilicata, the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Calabria.
The exhibition was accompanied by a bilingual catalogue (Greek, English), while a meeting was also organised, entitled: "Greek Colonisation: New data, modern approaches".
