The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is pleased to host another event in the “TSC presents” concert series by the Thessaloniki State Conservatory.
Distinguished local artists – members of the Orpheus Soloists ensemble – will present a highly engaging program featuring works by B. Bartók, D. Shostakovich, and Y. Constantinidis (including the world premiere of the Dodecanese Suite in an arrangement for violin, oboe, and piano).
We travel to 20th-century Europe, a time when folkloric music movements began to emerge, inspired by the ethnomusicological work of Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Composers from these movements drew heavily on traditional folk music. Constantinidis, influenced by this spirit, infused his compositions with elements of Greek folk tradition, often quoting folk melodies without modification. It was also common to compose short pieces, grouped into collections or cycles, often based on popular dances from earlier eras, such as the Five Miniatures by Shostakovich.
